originally established to honor americans who have served in world war i. today, it honors veterans of all wars for their patriotism and sacrifice for our country. there's a number of ceremonies being held in the dc region today. you're taking a live look right now at the world war ii memorial on the national mall. there will be a wreath-laying ceremony and performance by the united states air force band brass quintet beginning at 9:00 this morning. then at 11:00, a wreath will be laid at the tomb of the unknown at the arlington national cemetery. there will be a ceremony at the veterans memorial beginning at 1:00 p.m. looks like the weather will be stellar for all of the veterans day events. good morning, gwen. >> so happy mother nature will cooperate today weather wise because of all the outdoor activities you mentioned, but also there's a lot of parades going on. here's our fox 5 accuweather satellite radar composite. we do have a few clouds mainly to the north of us.

other than that, it's clear skies. that's what's going to be the story into the course of today, right across the board. yesterday's highs, we hit 65 degrees at reagan national airport. 66 at dulles, 63 at bwi thurgood marshall. it was a very mild day and people did get out to enjoy it hopefully. right now, a cool start to our morning at 45 at reagan national. we've got 40 at dulles, 41 degrees at bwi and some some of our neighborhoods, a cool 36 degrees for culpepper, 34 at cumberland to the west, 40 degrees at -- 43 at gaithersburg. today, winds light with a south otherly flow, bogs us to about 68 degrees. i wouldn't be surprised if some of you even reach the 70-degree mark out there. an absolutely great day to be outside. as far as veterans day is concerned, we're happy to give this big warmup and it's not

just for today either. i've got some pretty nice temperatures to talk about as we head through the early part of the week and before we start to see reality changes. but get out and enjoy today and once again, a special salute to all our veterans. thank you for all that you do. melanie? >> thanks, gwen. well, fallout continues in the wake of the resignation of cia director david petraeus. the general stepped down because of an affair with a woman who wrote his biography. this comes just days before petraeus was set to testify before a congressional panel investigating the u.s. consulate attacks in benghazi, libya. some lawmakers are questioning the timing. fox's molly henneberg has the latest. >> reporter: now at he's stepped down as cia director, general david petraeus will not testify this upcoming week at house and senate intelligence committee hearings, investigating the benghazi, libya consulate attack. but some on capitol hill are making it clear, they do want to hear from him in the future. >> i hope we don't have to subpoena a four-star general and

former cia director. i hope he would come voluntarily. but if he won't, he will be subpoenaed. >> reporter: petraeus, who had been in charge of the cia since september 2011 has previously told lawmakers the attack was in response to a protest over an antimuslim video. we now know that wasn't true. one gop lawmaker is asking questions about the timing of petraeus' departure. >> it comes days before he's set to testify before the house intelligence committee, and it really begs the question of what did the fbi know and when did they know it? how long did they sit on that information? i recall general petraeus briefed the senate about what happened in benghazi. did he have this looming over his head? >> reporter: general petraeus, who has been married to his wife holly since 1974, called his extra marital affair, quote, unacceptable, and said it showed, quote, extremely poor judgment. senator diane feinstein, chairman of the senate intelligence committee, lamented

the loss of petraeus at the cia, writing in a statement, quote, this is an enormous loss for our nation's intelligence community and for our country. she goes on to say, quote, i wish president obama had not accepted this resignation, but i understand and respect the decision. cia deputy director michael morel will head the cia for now, until president obama decides on another director. in washington, molly henneberg, fox news. well, a long-awaited vote count is finally in. it is official. florida's 29 electoral votes go to president obama. the president won by about 74,000 votes in the sunshine state. that is greater than the half percent difference than would have automatically triggered a recall. it pushes the number's electoral votes with 33. residents in dc are nervous this weekend after two women were attacked at the same time, taken into two separate cars early saturday morning. the suspects have not been

caught. lauren dimarco has the latest on precautions being taken by neighbors and police. >> reporter: dc police are patrolling the neighborhood around 48th street and sheriff road in northeast, just inside the district line. they say that's where just before 1:00 a.m., two women were attacked by a group of men. the victims were taken to separate cars and sexually assaulted. they were also robbed of several items, including one of their cell phones. >> very alarming. >> reporter: neighbors were shocked to hear about such a violent incident steps from their home. >> this may not be what people consider the safest neighborhood, but we're really a neighborhood-oriented, community-oriented neighborhood. everybody looks after everybody. >> for it to happen right there on the corner is kind of surprising. i never heard two at a time getting, two people at the same time getting taken by that. that's surprising. >> reporter: right now there's a vague lookout for five black males. police say one of the vehicles was red, but no information on the other car or the make or

model. they are trying to figure out whether the crime may be linked to other robberies in the area. >> everybody should be alerted about these type of things happening in this neighborhood. >> reporter: while residents wait for an update from police, many say they plan to be extra careful until the suspects are caught. >> because i walk my dog every day, every morning and every evening around here and have never had a problem. i definitely have a little something in me now. i'm definitely going to be a lot more aware of my surroundings. >> this is about the latest i will walk coming down here. now i'm going to make sure i'm in before dark. >> that was fox 5 lauren dimarco reporting. no word if surveillance cameras in the area captured the crime, but police will review the video. dc police arrested two people in the connection of a cab driver. the taxi was found on fire around 9:00 wednesday night on brent woke parkway in northeast. the driver's body was inside the car. investigators believe he had

first been shot. his name has not been released. 17-year-old joshua medin and juvenile female are both charged with murder. two men are dead after a motorcycle hit a pedestrian. a homeless pedestrian was not in the crosswalk when the motorcycle hit him. both of the men's names have not been released. people in new york city took up shovels and tools to help victims of superstorm sandy. volunteers got on buses at city hall and went to some of the hardest-hit areas in staten island, delivering supplies and cleaning up degree. there's currently 26 disaster recovery centers set up in the city, with more coming. and while things are improving nearly two weeks after the storm, there's plenty of people who still don't have power. fox's peter ducey has details on why some are out of electricity and out of patience. >> reporter: 3% of new jersey and 2% of the state of new york are still in the dark today,

almost two weeks after superstorm sandy passed through. it was a storm everyone knew was coming, but the largest power company on long island, the long island power authority, or lipa, is now being blamed for poor preparation. >> i don't believe what they did was adequate. i don't believe it was right. i believe part of it is this system design and part of it is just their performance and part of it is the fact these utilities are a monopoly. >> reporter: at first, the government-owned lipa reportedly asked other utility companies for just 700 workers to help them restore power, but they ended up needing 10,000. the company lipa contracted to help clean up sandy's mess, national grid, said last night they are doing extremely well. >> we are progressing very well, based on the unprecedented mage on the storm. >> i am very comfortable with how we've performed on this restoration. >> reporter: not comfortable with their performance? republican congressman peter king. he wrote a letter to president obama saying i urge you to personally intervene to ensure

that all appropriate federal assets and authorities are fully deployed to the impacted region. king and democratic long island congressman steve israel want the army corps of engineers dispatched to long island. israel says the army corps of engineers can go into baghdad and kabul and turn the lights on, then it's time for them to come to new york and finish the job the utility company hasn't been able to. in washington, peter ducey, fox news. well, it sent dozens of people running for safety in the middle of the night. a house explodes in indianapolis. look at these pictures. the flames then spread to other homes. we'll tell you what may be behind this deadly blast. >> and a grand opening like no other. a new mega store welcomes hundreds of customers at the newest naval exchange store on the campus of the walter reed military medical center. we'll show you that when we come back.



. making headlines this morning, at least one person is dead after a home exploded in indianapolis. a number of people could be seen running to safety in just their pajamas. at least two homes were destroyed, several others burned. so far, no word on a cause of the blast, but investigators are currently checking natural gas lines. two people are being treated for minor injuries. an earthquake centered in eastern kentucky also rattled nearby states. the 4.3-magnitude quake hit saturday afternoon, 10 miles west of whitesburg. residents in eight states, including virginia and west virginia could feel the jolt. no reports of any serious damage. a 5.8-magnitude aftershock struck northern myanmar this morning. no official reports of new damage or injuries, but as many as 12 people may have been killed from yesterday's 6.8 tremor in the area. a bridge and coal mine collapsed. president obama is scheduled to travel to myanmar next week as part of a swing through

southeast asia. and just in time for veterans day, this weekend, a new, bigger than usual base exchange store opened in bethesda on the campus of the national military medical hospital. fox's john hanrahan was there for the opening. >> reporter: a guy gigantic line of people assembled outside a new store in bethesda saturday, and when the ribbon was cut, the shoppers streamed into the newest naval exchange store in the world. many military posts offer retail stores, but the one now open on the campus of the walter reed national medical center in bethesda is different. >> there was a store here. it was about 40,000 square feet. this one's 150,000 square feet. so the entire previous store fit in our back room storage. >> reporter: the new navy exchange is designed differently, with many extra wide aisles to more easily

accommodate wounded warriors. this on-post store features a food court and on its opening day, subway spokesman jared took a turn behind the counter. >> good enough to eat! >> reporter: it was clear from his speed, jared has made these subs before. among the other celebrities on hand for opening day, fitness guru denise austin, and chef robert irvine, who interrupted his book signing to remember the 237th birthday of the navy. the huge navy exchange is very green in its design. in fact, the roof is covered with soil, on which newly planted grass seed is sprouting. the lawn on the roof will provide better insulation and will reduce runoff from rain and snow. back inside, military families will be able to buy everything from the basics to wine, beer and spirits, to wide screen

televisions, all tax-free. in part, because of the surrounding affluent area where a lot of military retirees live and work in their second careers, this naval exchange has a rather high proportion of designer clothing. in fact, the whole store has a rather upscale look. >> reminds me of a macy's or something like that. >> what did you buy? >> we bought a comforter. >> luggage. >> luggage. >> jewelry. how about that? jewelry! >> so is the recession over? >> definitely. >> it's time to get the economy started. >> reporter: belay the talk of sequestration, feel speed ahead at the new navy exchange in bethesda. >> brings back so many memories for me as a former asi's shopper. yesterday was the 237th birthday of the marine corps. on november 10th, 1775, the continental congress approved the resolution calling for two battalions of marines to defend the country by air and sea during the american revolution. since then, the date has been recognized annually by the

employees share a common bond of wearing a military one in the past. >> tsa and the military are similar in many ways and attracts many of the same kinds of people who are looking to serve their country. >> reporter: susan is one of more than 60 veterans employed by tsa at the airport. >> we're all geared to work together as a team, to accomplish a mission. and ours obviously is to protect the traveling public. >> reporter: she and other veterans are seen on the concourse in more ways than one. >> makes me feel proud that they are able to show that we are doing our job to help. >> reporter: andrew weber is a korean war veteran and has been with tsa for 10 years and says the job full fills a desire in servicemen. >> when we had 9/11, we all wanted to do our part to help and to get back into the system and get back into the security process. and so a lot of us did come right over here and join in to

. i am looking forward to reaching out and working with leaders of both parties, to meet the challenges we can only solve together. >> the purposes of forging a bipartisan agreement that begins to solve the problem, we're willing to accept new revenue under the right conditions. the election is over and now comes the tough job of working together to avoid another recession. leaders from both parties have had a bit of a tone of reconciliation, but will it lead to a deal to avoid the so-called fiscal cliff? that is one of the big topics on fox sunday this weekend, but first, questions surrounding the resignation of general david petraeus from the cia. chris wallace joins us now. >> reporter: it's been quite a week, melanie. >> uh, yeah, i'm exhausted! >> reporter: we are at the top of the hour going to have the

first interview, exclusive interview with diane feinstein, chairman of the senate intelligence committee. and interestingly enough, she came out with a statement, the only leader to do this on friday, to say i understand the decision for petraeus to step down, but i wish the president had not accepted his resignation, with more revelations this weekend. we'll ask her whether she still feels that way and of course petraeus was supposed to testify before her committee on thursday, a hearing they were going to hold about libya, the benghazi attack. now he's not going to testify. his new deputy, the acting director, mike morel, is going to testify. we'll ask her about that as well. >> right, chris. the question has been somewhat about the talking points memo about the attack. we're told that came from the cia. one might say the talking points were misleading at best. i'm wondering if senator feinstein, do you get the sense that democrats are also wanting to get fact-finding and see what

was said, why? >> reporter: oh, i think there are several things they want to find out. one, they want to find out why all these, these warnings, these pleas in effect for more security before the attack went unheeded and they didn't beef up security at the consulate. two, the time line on the day of the attack, 9/11, there were seven hours there. could the cia or the pentagon have done more, because there was a first attack, then seven hours later, attack, where two more americans were killed. could they have done more to try to protect them? send in reinforcements during those seven hours? finally, as you say, the very confusing story after the fact. so that's why they are holding these hearings, to try to find out. one of the questions i'm going to ask senator feinstein is do they think it's okay just to hear from the deputy director, now the acting director, or are they going to insist, even though he's resigned that petraeus come and testify before the committee? >> we saw congressman chase

already saying it may have to come down to a subpoena. we'll see what happens on that. and of course the big issue is the fiscal cliff. i don't know about you, but i get the sense people have this election hangover, sort of drained right now. but we do hear talk about this coming together. do you think that's going to trickle down to capitol hill, especially as they get only seven weeks left to work something out? >> reporter: i was going to say, we always talk about the countdown to the election. 51 days, 51 days until the fiscal cliff, because that kicks in new year's day. $600billion in tax increases and spending cuts, unless they work out a deal. they may be tired now, but you gotta think that's going to focus -- the congressional budget office says if you go over the cliff, we will be thrown back into a recession and unemployment will go back over the course of next year over 9%. man, if that doesn't focus people on capitol hill, i don't know what will. >> so i'll be watching your show today. i know you have two senators, two representatives, two democrats, two republicans.

are they talking holding hands here or not? i don't know. >> reporter: that's one of the things we'll find out. they have got to make major deals. one of the questions i'll ask, are they just going to kick the can down the road, because i'm not sure they can solve all of this. you got to figure out how to raise billions of dollars in taxes. got to figure out what you're going to do for billions in spending cuts. got to figure out what you're going to do for social security and medicare. we've had years we've been talking about this and haven't had it done. can we do it in 51 days? >> i would like to say i'm hopeful, chris, but i guess i'm kind of skeptical. >> reporter: we'll talk to -- maybe we'll have the fox news sunday solution here today. >> we can hope so. thanks, chris. >> reporter: thanks, melanie. >> catch fox news sunday at 9:00 a.m., right after our show. people living in northern utah got hit with a second round of winter weather this weekend. as much as a foot and a half of snow fell in some areas. salt lake city got about 9 inches. the storm is expected to taper off today. thousands of residents have lost power and there are a number of car accidents related to the

over your career, what is the biggest role you were so relentless about that you would not stop going after? >> as an actor, you can't really get too emotionally involved. i've wanted stuff and i've really, really wanted it and i've been disappointed when i haven't got it. but if you kind of sort of give -- there's way too much disappointment to give everything. so i kind of, i kind of pretend not to want it. you've got to let it ride and try to move on, because if you -- you know, i wanted to play this part, because i didn't want to play this part. actually, i walked away from it a number of times and thankfully, barbara convinced me to do it. but it's, it's a strange one. you can't get too involved. there are always other parts. >> i read an interesting article recently about product placement in heineken. i watched the movie last night. it was perfect, didn't depart

from the story at all one bit. i wanted to ask you, as an actor, when does product placement become a problem in films? >> i think when you're kind of building the scene around it, but i won't, i just won't allow that to happen, because i think it's a waste of time. but, you know, i'm very, i'm very kind of aware. heineken and all the other people i could mention rapidly gave us a lot of money to make this movie and we can't turn that down. it's just trying to do it as subtlely as we possibly can. >> this has been one of the greatest franchises of all time, the longest-running franchise, 23 films. hypothetically, one of your characters that you played in your past could be fleshed out through 23 movies, what would be the most interesting to see? >> god, such complicated questions! ask me my favorite bond movie! i don't know. the chance to play a character like this is really rewarding, as long as the writing stays good. you know, i mean, that's what hopefully we've done with this, is just to kind of -- then it's

so we don't have any clouds to talk about at all. that will linger into the entire afternoon, where we'll just have plenty of sun for you. current temperatures, 37 at manassas. we've got 43 to the north at hagerstown. 36 for cumberland. 49 at annapolis this hour, 45 at dc, and 40 degrees at dulles. so here's a look at the jet stream. it's really making a big change for us, because we saw all the snow in parts of utah and over areas of colorado getting hit as well. this is the area where all of that colder air is shuffling in. however, on the opposite of that is us. we are on the opposite side, where we're going to get an influx of warmer air moving in here. let's take a look at radar. i want to show you something really significant. this is this frontal system. a big, major player in what we just showed you, because on the back side of this frontal system is where that colder air is coming in. many of these areas are seeing a lot of snowfall and also storms, but on the opposite side, we're

just seeing adverse conditions here, seeing plenty of sunshine. that's going to change because this is our next weather maker, headed towards us. back to our weather maps, by the time we get through into monday, we're going to see that system heading towards us. look at the temperature differences that that frontal system is making, into the teens, 20s, single digits, versus the 60s and 70s ahead of it. above-normal conditions for us in terms of temperatures. ridge of high pressure building in. no shortage of sunshine for today. we are warming up to the upper 60s. i wouldn't be surprised if some of you saw 70 degrees. 68 degrees today, light southerly wind flow, plenty of sunshine. 51 for tonight. winds from the south 5 to 10 miles an hour, becoming clear. and your fox 5 accuweather seven-day forecast showing we are redded to warm conditions for monday as well. but with the front moving in monday night into tuesday, looks like it's going to bring us wet weather. we're talking rain showers. look how our temperature dropped. i showed you on the national map

. griffin is looking for an improvement following the bye. he understands the fan frustration with the slow start, but says it's the players' jobs to fix it. expectations for griffin were high when the season started, but not many experts thought he would be as good as he's been. even coach mike shanahan admits that. fox 5's lindsay murphy takes a look at griffin's career, just nine games in.

♪ >> reporter: you can't spell grace without the letters r-g. robert griffin, iii has carried the redskins with his arm and legs, exceeding expectations thus far in his rookie season. >> there's no question about that. if you told me at the midway point of the season that robert would be the most successful quarterback in the nfl for yards per play first, second, third down, i would literally say you were crazy. for a guy to be able to do that and still have limited turnovers has been pretty impressive. robert will be the first one to tell you it's not just him. they work together. robert would also tell you stats don't mean anything until you start winning football games. lot goes into it. but yeah, very proud of what he's done and i believe it will still get better. >> reporter: griffin's ability to run the option offense so well, so fast has him on pace

for a record season n week 6, the vikings got a quick lesson on griffin, 76-yard touchdown that clinched the skins victory. >> rg-iii is going to outrace everybody! >> reporter: on the year, griffin has racked up 529 rushing yards and 6 scores, both single-season record for a skins qb. >> he fires downfield, got it for 7! >> reporter: griffin can also air it out. he connected for an 88-yard touchdown in his rookie debut. >> set to throw. >> reporter: a week later, a 68-yard score. rg-iii is close to 2000 yards passing with 8 touchdowns. >> you try to appreciate everything and try not to weigh too much on your personal success, so that you don't have to be humbled. i try to make sure i stay grounded. lot of people around me make sure i stay grounded. you never want to feel like you're bigger than life. so when it comes to that, i don't want to ever need to be humbled, because i always appreciate things and make sure i continue to push forward and try to get better. >> reporter: griffin has also

had his fair share of growing pains. he suffered a mild concussion in week 5 against the falcons, took a huge hit on a reverse pass from josh morgan against pittsburgh. and just last week, he went airborne for a 1st down. each moment, a learning experience for the first year qb who says he wants his aggressive play to rub off on his teammates. >> i see that they see their quarterback out there putting it on the line every single play, makes them want to put it on the line every single play. it's more about, you know, inspiring guys to go out and no matter what the score is, no matter what the down and distance is, we can make it happen because we're the ones that are out there. >> reporter: in spite of all of his personal success, griffin is not happy or satisfied with the skins' 3-6 record. and before heading into the bye week, he had this message. >> i think guys just need to make sure they continue to stay tough, you know, in between the ears. you don't want to feel sorry for yourself ever. you don't want to accept defeat. that's something that i'll never accept. you try to continue to get

better. and just make sure you go out there with no excuses. >> i like that. no excuses. again, the skins have the bye week, but they will return next week and host the eagles at fedex field. the day of football begins with the fox 5 redskins pregame show at 11:30 this morning. that is followed by fox nfl sunday at noon. then it is the skins and the eagles, right here on fox 5 next week. kickoff is at 1:00. some folks in an illinois town got a jump start on the veterans day holiday. coming up, we'll hear from veterans and future recruits on the importance of a veterans day parade in illinois.

show them support. >> i enjoy it. it's nice to see everybody cares. >> hundreds turned out for the fifth annual veterans day parade in quincy, illinois. the event honors the men and women who served our country, as well as new recruits to the armed forces. and you are taking another live look right now at the world war ii memorial at the national mall. there will be a wreath-laying ceremony just a few minutes from now at 9:00. there are also ceremonies at the veterans memorial and arlington national ceremony at 1:00 p.m., also events throughout the day at the navy memorial, the air force memorial, so many nice ways to say thank you to those who have served our country throughout its history. >> absolutely. and also, melanie, there are a lot of parades. i know there's a huge parade in dc. lot of the smaller communities also have their own parades, which is always nice, because everybody in the community comes out and salutes their local vets. that's really great, especially for kids to get out today and enjoy it and see some of the history that our veterans have

established for us. and i'm just so happy that the weather is going to cooperate! i know we have a lot of visitors this weekend to the nation's capitol and i'm happy to say they will enjoy plenty of sunshine. let's take a look at some of this for you. big warmup coming today, just for our vets. we've got temperatures that are going to be well above seasonal average. yesterday, we were 5 to 6 degrees warmer than we should have been. today is an even warmer day. take a look. sunshine, with very light winds moving in from the south, 5 to 10 miles per hour. it's not going to be too windy for anybody outside. we're talking 68 degrees, and i would not be surprised, especially south of dc, if they see temperatures that are even closer to the 30-degree -- excuse me, no, no, no! 70-degree mark is what i want to say! i'm a little too excited. as we move to the beginning of the week, here's our two-day forecast. expect to see showers monday night into tuesday morning and look at the big temperature difference. we've got a major cold front coming through and that's
